Walnut Elementary School Reviews

Walnut needs a better reading program.

'Fabulous', 'Positive environment', 'true blessing' - just a few words to describe Walnut School. Don't let the 'in need of a facelift' exterior fool you. From your first step into the office, you will see why Walnut is a 'Diamond in the rough'. Principal Klewer is impressive, to say the least. He is the reason we are back in La Habra. His dedication to the students and his staff are clearly evident. He focusses on continuously improving the school to make learning a positive experience. Teachers are dedicated professionals who care deeply about the students. They personally finance needed classroom materials and many arrive early/stay late to give students extra help. Lines of communication are always open and any concerns are addressed immediately. Parent involvement is encouraged and both English/Spanish speaking parents are made welcome. Walnut is a fabulous school and a true blessing to those of us in La Habra.

My daughter attended this school for her 3rd grade year. The teachers were friendly but fairly flakey and we got very little information about our daughter's progress throughout the year. Parent participation was in fact discouraged on one occasion when we pressed our daughter to put more work into a report and the teacher said our opinion didn't matter as long as our daughter was satisfied. She hardly put any effort into it; we knew this. I expect a lot of the trouble is that the teachers are harried, dealing with students many of whom seem to need more education in basic integrity than any school is responsible for giving. The principal, bless his heart, really cares about the school and the students and can be seen out at the curb every afternoon seeing the students off.
